STRUCTURES: a writing process scaffold

The STRUCTURES instructional routine provides concrete and practical guidance for every step of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, proofreading, evaluating and publishing. A Writing Cycle approach helps teachers set specific expectations for each step of the process, while students self-check how well they meet those expectations, becoming masters of their own thoughts in writing.

This student- and teacher-friendly scaffold called A Writing Cycle STRUCTURES conventional ways to site evidence to support students’ thoughts about what they

  • Read in fiction and non-fiction reading texts
  • Observe systematically in the world around them.

The Writing Cycle assures student mastery of up to 13 modes of writing in three core genres of writing. It helps students develop the ability to

  • Document their understanding of clear, detailed and specific writing prompts
  • Organize their thoughts over longer time frames (four or more weeks)
  • Take their writing seamlessly through each step of the writing process to publication.

For example, Writing to Win STRUCTURES does not assume that students have already mastered a “compare-contrast” structure for writing. Instead, in the course of nine weeks, students learn the mental structure required to write effective compare-contrast drafts using...

The two instructional tools of A Writing Cycle

  1. A Working Portfolio* prompts students to create three compare-contrast responses to reading texts and publish one of them.
  2. An Unassisted Writing Sample tests students' ability to write a compare-contrast draft on their own.

*Each mode specific Working Portfolio comes with an Unassisted Writing Sample.

“Working Portfolios and Unassisted Writing Samples are especially friendly and useful tools for helping students organize their thoughts before they write.” –Fourth grade teacher
